1. Do you own any original (not mass produced) works of art?
-
2. If yes, what is it, and why? (Type/media, size, subject matter, cost, gift or purchase, what does it mean to you/why were you drawn to it)
-
3. If you don’t own any original art, what are 3 reasons why not- in order of importance? (too expensive, no interest, don’t understand art, etc…)
-
4. For those who like art, but have never purchased works of art, what would make you consider doing so? (price range, custom commission, smaller size, more personal connection, etc?)
-
5. How often do you visit museums or galleries and which ones?
-
6. If none, or not often- why not? What would make it more appealing?
-
7. Please choose 1-3 works by Carla E. Reyes that you like best, and explain why? (Visit http://www.carlaereyes.com for more examples)

8. Please choose 1-3 works by Carla E. Reyes that you like LEAST, and explain why? (Visit http://www.carlaereyes.com for more examples)

My husband and I have an extensive collection with an emphasis on the works of self-taught artists. Some works have been rather expensive–$5,000+. Others , particularly works we have bought at studios for artists with disabilities, have been quite affordable. We have sculptures–wood, fiber, concrete with mosaic, ceramic, and metal. We have masks from Mexico and Guatemala. We have every size we can fit, from 3′ x 5′ to tiny drawings. We do own oil paintings but due to budget have primarily works on paper. Oh, and we also have collected modern ceramics from Germany, Indian art, Guatemalan folk jewelry, and weavings from Mexico. We are compulsive–we can’t possibly hang even half of our stuff. We go to museums and galleries a lot, often spending a day in Chelsea or Williamsburg. We always enjoy the Cavin-Morris Gallery, Phyllis Kind, and Ricco/Maresca. We go to fairs, including Art Basel-Miami, Art Chicago, and the Outsider Fair, and have relationships with many dealers from all over the US and in other countries. We have on many occasions called collectors and asked to visit. We have some student work as well. My husband wants to branch out into photography. We’ve collected for many, many years; collecting has been a great joy. The Miscommunications series wows me. Painted words have great resonance. I like the transformative but mysterious quality. Flower paintings just don’t grab me.
